A New Way to Play
I would like to take Equus-Sims in a new direction. I have laid out the forum and gameplay changes below, but the gist is this: I want to return our community to a place of storytelling, ingenuity, and imagination. There will be far fewer rules, restrictions, and maintenance, all stripped away in hopes that we can shift our focus toward becoming a more engaging, creative, and diverse community of horse people.
What Will Happen to Equus-Sims/2.5?
The goal here is to provide everyone with the opportunity to check this new direction out first hand, in hopes of seeing how this new direction will work for our community moving forward. My plan is to make this forum the official Equus-Sims site. Fear not though, 2.5 will remain active for those who enjoy it. We will have more news about this later. For now, please enjoy the new forum! Post as you would normally, maybe even make a fresh start for yourself.
Note: The end of the trial doesn't mean the end of this forum, so any content you post will remain here.
How long with the trial last?
I'm going to play this by ear, but it may take a month, more or less. I want a lot of people to have a chance to join and get familiar enough to where they are comfortable and can start posting freely. I need time as well, to actively promote various activities on the forum, and engage with members so I can get valuable insight on the new direction before officially switching. Moreover, I want to test this new forum software, Discourse, to see if it is viable for the community.
I have started a guide here that contains markdown and some HTML that the forum currently supports. We are working on expanding this, but for now these have been tested and seem to work fine.
Exciting Changes Abound!
Make the horses that you want to create.
Create any color or breed of horse that you can imagine. I'd like to once again welcome fantasy equines, in addition to possibly brand new horse breeds created by our members. No registration or approval required.
Host any kind of competition you want.
In hopes of making competitions more creative and lighthearted, regulations have been lifted to allow members to create competitions however they'd like. The results of your show can be determined through whatever method you prefer, such as by vote, by a random generator, by judging, or even by roleplay. Set your own rules and expectations for your shows, and even get creative with their location, weather, and names. Host a show with a friend, or host a show just for teams!
Going back to our roots.
A few things are returning from our first forum that will hopefully revitalize the roleplaying aspect of our community. We will once again have directories on the forum where members can design profiles for their establishments, horses, and now their characters too. Fun shows will make a return, where members can host more imaginative shows that are beyond the normal disciplines we've come to know so well. The "Workshops" category is new, but it's just a conglomeration of familiar activities, such as challenges and clinics.
Simplified rules and approvals.
Getting approved on the forum is the only approval system we're going to have on this new forum. Our behavior and posting rules are pretty much the same, but most categories no longer have their own regulations or approvals. The forum and its activities will require very little maintenance, moderated by only a handful of staff. This means easier communication, and will hopefully be the solution to lessening strain between members and staff.
Achievements are something I have always wanted to implement. These are goofy, lighthearted goals associated with a variety of tasks that members can complete. Some of these are very easy, like creating your first horse profile on Equus-Sims, while others will require members to obtain numerous other achievements before they can be earned. Our achievements will be pretty basic to start, but they will grow in number as we add more categories for them and expand upon the ones we have established already. Down the road a little ways we will have badges for certain larger achievements that you can display on your profiles.
No more currency or point system.
The site will no longer have official currency, points, or leaderboards. Members are welcome to establish clubs on Equus-Sims that track members' achievements, but there will not be any formal associations or committees. Keep track of wins, work toward achievements, or establish a reward system that is unique to the shows you host.
Focusing on the members.
At the end of the day, Equus-Sims should be a place for horse people. Whether you just love them deeply, or if you compete in real life, your experience shouldn't matter. It's about the stories we share, the photos we create, and the imagination that we bring out of each other. I want to focus on that. I want ES to return to being member-driven, where we focus on having fun, being creative, and making this a great place for everyone to enjoy, regardless of their knowledge or expertise.
The return of clubs.
Clubs are a great way for members to come together over a shared interest or passion. Clubs of any kind, all sorts, are welcome and encouraged. Use them as a platform for teaching, competing, or just geeking out together.
The ES Legacy Challenge!
I've been wanting to do this forever! It's The Sims 3 Legacy challenge with an equestrian twist. Build your stable's path to fame, fortune and success...starting with nothing but a few simoleons and a lotta wishful thinking!
Returning to roleplay.
Not necessarily just the type of writing style, but rather the way we think. I want members to focus on their characters and the stories surrounding them. On our first forum, it was required to create a profile for your character before you could participate, which encouraged members to really get into that character. I'm not requiring anything, but I am hoping that with all these changes, we can really focus on storytelling and tapping into our creativity.
Keeping it fun with workshops.
Equus-Sims has always been a good source of learning and generally a very inspiring place to be. Workshops are all about promoting learning and enjoyment! Their activities are meant for improving skills, learning something new, or for having fun with our games. This might include clinics, editing and photography classes, design and building prompts, horse or character makeovers, goofy games, anything of that nature!
Make your own path.
What is important is totally up to you. The time you spend on Equus should be fulfilling, and it should be your choice as to what you think is most rewarding. Your horses, characters, and establishments are as valuable as you want them to be. On this new forum, it's up to you which path you want to follow or make for yourself. Become a competitor, a storyteller, a teacher, a builder, a creator, a designer, an opportunist, an enthusiast, a horse nerd, a breeder, an inventor...There's opportunities for everyone, and it is only what you make of it.
Open for suggestions.
I have setup a Site Feedback and Help category for suggestions and site help. If you don’t know how to use the forum; if you want to make a suggestion for a new activity or a way to improve an existing one; or if you have some cool ideas for achievements, this category is made specifically for ingenuity (and the occasional very confused member).
If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM on Slack and I will get back to you ASAP.
