Stellan looked up from his stud registry papers to find his wife giving him doe eyes. It's another buckskin with white, isn't it? Elaina nodded enthusiastically. Ok, let me see. He poured over the ad, now familiar enough with family tree names to nod approvingly without having to spend an hour in a book or on the internet. Stellan then turned his eye to the pictures. Nice neck, nice shoulders, nice through the body...where are his hindquarters? Elaina leaned over and laid a finger on the paper Here - see that angle? It's very impressive. He just doesn't have the muscle, that's all. And look at that handsome head! Stellan looked skeptical. He's got skinny little thoroughbred legs he frowned. Elaina grabbed the sheet back And thoroughbreds propel themselves forwards at 70kph with those legs. He'll have plenty of pushing power, you'll see. Speaking of which...
It was an interstate drive. Alone. Elaina had a babyshower to attend and Judith and Em were both too busy. Nearly five hours later, Stellan was praying that this horse had superpowers.
He took Stellan's breath away. He carried himself effortlessly around the arena, and any doubts Stellan had dissipated when the stallion launched into an extended trot all on his own. He was a natural gymnast. And his head was very handsome. After the showing, Stellan sent Elaina a photo. Ok, I'm convinced. Apparently he's for sale too...you knew that, didn't you? All he got in reply was a wink emoji. He sighed, and ran his hands along the buckskin's neck, smiling.
Stellan and Elaina were spending their lunch breaks lately browsing stud ads and researching bloodlines. They were on the hunt for suitable candidates for the mares, considering purchasing if they found a horse or horses that they really liked. It was very tedious work.
Em was finally ready to start getting some hands-on veterinary experience. Eventually she'd become resident vet, but for now she was under the guidance of the establishment's trusted practitioner. It was time to begin keeping track of Galaxia and Plum's cycles so that the stud could get up and running again. Under a watchful eye, Em checked each of their vitals, then performed reproductive exams to ensure that everything was in working order and that there was nothing that could cause complications in pregnancy and foaling. The vet helped her scan the mares' ovaries and deciphered what showed up on the ultrasound - the horses seemed to be at opposite ends of their cycles. They were turned back out into their paddock and Em cleaned up, thanked the vet, and dove straight into the nearest shower.
The sooty golden mare was becoming more and more consistent in her work. Em had been bringing her along slowly but surely, in part due to the lack of time she had between her veterinary studies, riding Holy Moly, and general stable duties. She knew Thelma was ready to start seriously progressing, and as the mare gave her a beautiful stretchy trot across the arena she decided she'd ask Judith to help out.
Judith patted Jazz's neck proudly. They were improving together so much lately, and the new arena was the icing on the cake. The footing was perfect, and Jazz felt it. His extended trot was so much more forward and easily accessible now that Judith could ride it properly. Her bouncing had put him off in the past, but with regular lessons and some added pilates Jazz now powered forward unencumbered. He seemed to go better in the Mickleham bridle Judith had bought to try on the ridden horses too. She had to train him in the double bridle still as that's what was required in the upper levels but she decided to use it where she could.
Emiliana was making her way down to the beach-side property gate astride Holy Moly. It was one of his weekly scheduled gallops to keep him in shape for the eventing season, and a long stretch of beach was a minute's ride away. Holy Moly's head turned as Stellan trotted up on Zenos. Mind if we join you? he asked. The two stallions sniffed and nipped at each other. Em felt apprehensive about such a green baby galloping with her, let alone on a beach he'd never seen before. What if he starts bucking and sets off my horse? She thought for a moment, and decided to trust her cousin's training skills. Yeah, sure. I'm blaming you if we die, though. Stellan smiled, Ok, lead on!
Zenos stared in amazement at the calm stretch of waves, wanting as usual to chew on them and deciding very quickly that that was a bad idea. He otherwise took to his new environment very quickly. Em was impressed, but Holy Moly was starting to get antsy. He knew he got to run out here, and he wanted to run now. I don't know how long I can keep him from throwing a fit, Stellan she called out. With a nod, he moved Zenos off at a brisk trot. She followed, her mount getting increasingly excited. Ready for takeoff? Stellan shouted back to her. She gave a thumbs up, and both horses lurched forwards. She still only had one hand on the reins, but Holy Moly had what he wanted and could only go straight. She passed Stellan in a superman pose, and they both nearly fell off laughing.
