"THIS horse?" Walt asked with wide eyes as he put his hand up to the large horse's snout.
"Yep! his names Oakley," Burton answered as he adjusted the girth.
"Huh, he's kinda terrifying." Walt said flatly. Burton scoffed and rolled his eyes with a small snicker.
"trust me, Oakley is a super sweet horse. He's about 22 years old, he's not going to do anything to ya! Hes a big cow," Burton said with a smile, taking the reins from over the dark bay's head. He handed the reins to Walt. "and you're gonna start jumping on him today!" Burton said wit a big smile on his face.
"oh whoa." Walt said with a small grin emerging on his face. Burton noticed the grin on Walt's face and snickered and the two made their way into the arena.
Oakley is pretty much the ideal lesson horse, besides the fact hes about 18 hands tall. Most of the lesson kids are a little scared of the huge horse, BUT Walts 28. (his birthday was yesterday, so woot) Walt can handle Oakley. In fact, he did pretty well!
Leading him into the arena, Walt had a issue with getting himself onto the big horse- thank god for mounting blocks.
Walt looked around, realizing he felt like a freaking giant on the horse. A big old smirk grew on his face and he snickered devilishly, seeing Mark on the other side of the arena on a lean Akhal-teke and being able to look over his head. Burton gave Walt an odd look, but Walt didn't notice, he was too happy that his tiny self could see over the head of his 195 cm tall mate.
"Alright Walt, lets get on the rail tracking left!" Burton said. Walt nodded and tried to move the horse forward- finding it difficult to push on the fat horse.
"You gotta add some leg on that fatty" Mark called out to Walt.
"oh-" Walt said and gave the horse a confident kick forward. "hold on- Mark you're not the one to talk!" Walt said turning his head to look at Mark. Mark just shrugged and continued working with his horse.
Burton shook his head. "Walt you should try and get along with Mark, you're going to a clinic with him this weekend," Burton said snickering.
"WHAT" Walt asked loudly.
"I thought I told Winny to tell you that we wanted you to go to a little clinic near Dublin , there's a intermediate section and Advanced section. We signed you up for Intermediate. You're going down there with Mark." Burton explained as he sat down on the mounting block.
"Oooh nice! Which horse am I taking?" Walt asked excitedly.
"I think we're taking Sunny and Edward right?" Mark asked Burton.
"Uh.. yeah, Sunny needed some schooling, so walt," Burton looked over at the tiny guy. "You'll be riding a halflinger named Sunny." He said with a nod.
"oh.." Walt was a little dissapointed. "and uh- Marks taking the horse he's riding now?" Walt asked.
"yep." Burton nodded
Marquis and EYEC Man On Fire "Edward"
The lesson went on as usual, Walt got more canter work in and was quick to learn that Oakley was a big comfy couch of a horse. All of his movements were extremely comfy. Hell, he aced the sitting trot where usually he'll practically fly off the horse on the other horses he rides. Oakley was different, and he really loved riding the horse, although it did involve adding a lot more leg. Being a draft horse, hes a "little" lazy!
After two good laps of canter in both direction, and a quick walk break, Burton asked for Walt to pick up the posting trot and they did the usual lap. Pretty much the whole entire lesson Burton had to get at Walt to make him get his damn heels down.
"Alright Walt, I want you to go over this little cross rail here," Burton said, having lost his voice a little.
Walt smiled and nodded.
"Remember to get into two-point over this jump, and stay in two-point for about three strides after the jump," Burton said, watching Walt steer the big draft to the tiny jump.
"okay, add more leg, make that horse march towards that jump! he might just walk over the jump, so make sure hes going!" Burton said.
Walt gave Oakley and kick and leaned forward into the jumping position and the big draft popped over the small jump.
Walt smiled wide, once feeling the horse's back legs on the ground he sat. Although Burton had said other wise,,,
"Well! You disregarded putting your heels down and staying up for three strides but, you stayed up and for your first that was pretty good!" Burton said, Walt put his weight back and got Oakley down to a walk.
"Now, we're gonna do that a few more times so we can fix that position, if we have to I'll have Mark jump Edward for you to watch." Burton said. Walt nodded and picked up the trot once again
