@wynlet Thank you <3
The crisp Autumn morning broke over the countryside, coating the hills in hues of orange, red and yellow with the sunrise. The bitter wind nipped at toes and noses alike while leaves crunched beneath muddied boots. A few early birds greeted the morning with their song as the sound of hoof beats echoed through the dormant yard.
Horse and rider walked side by side through the vacant barn and out into the chilly morning toward the arena gate. Two more stood near by to swing open the gate with a screech, all the while clutching over sized mugs around frosty fingers.
"Take it easy this morning, she's not long back into work," one, Jack, spoke through a scarf. He settled on a cavaletti block, carefully placing the steaming mug on the block too.
"You told me that already, Dad. I know what I'm doing," The rider, Jasmine, spoke as she sprung without effort into the saddle.
For perhaps fifteen minutes the third member remained quiet, content to sip the piping hot coffee out the Disney mug. Arms folded across her woolly and dark blue eyes attentively following the mare around the arena. Occasionally she would shake her head or sigh, sometimes clicking her tongue when the mare came close enough.
"You're very quiet, dreaming of what could have been?" Jack remarked, a light laugh playing in his words. "Steph. Stephie? Anyone home," he spoke again, jabbing Steph with an boney elbow but keeping focus on Jasmine and the mare parading around.
Steph sighed, rolled her eyes and took a size able step away from Jack. "Actually no," she replied simply, "If you must know, I'm trying to watch how Nano and Jas work since 'yanno you sent Don away."
Beside her Jack huffed like the overgrown child he was, folding his arms across his chest. "He chose to leave."
An awkward silence fell over the two spectators.
Steph broke the silence: "I think they'd be a good fit for each other."
"Hmm," was Jack's grunt of a reply, escaping as he got to his feet.
"So, yes? " Steph pressed, taking her eyes from Nano and Jasmine for the first time in half an hour to watch Jack for a reaction.
"They work decent together. Nano needs someone more experienced to bring her back to fitness, otherwise yes," He remarked, voice unwavering.
Steph gave a content sigh, pushing off the fence and starting to walk over to Nano, pleased a decision had finally been made about the mares future. Obviously this wasn't something nor he or Nano were taking lightly, after all both missed Don and knew they couldn't find a better friend.
This was not the direction I originally planned for this to go. It was supposed to be one of those stupid moments, but this felt better. Still can't write for peanuts, haven't written anything decent for months and this is what I have spat out. You're welcome. Apologies if this doesn't make any sense, I never really introduced my characters and their relationships properly. >< But essentially Steph, Jack and Don all met at Seren Coch (an accient HArpg stable). Jack pretty much went through the motions with anything that moved. I have a very old back story written up about it, but it needs attention, it is embarrassing.
Was also supposed to be #monthlytheme thingy. Socks, jumpers, scarves, coffees and crunchy leaves - but I lost my way with that too, and am late ><. Oopsie.
