Equus Sims Quick Start Guide
Welcome to Equus-Sims
First of all, a very warm welcome to Equus Sims! We hope that you will find this guide to be informative and helpful as you begin your journey here on our forum. If you have any suggestions on how this guide could be improved feel free DM me, Christina Hanson. Also, if you do have any specific questions or need any help at all please feel free to post in the Forum Help
We’re always looking for ways we can improve and we truly value your feedback!
So how do I get started?
The first step is, of course, to read our site rules, if you haven’t done so already. Some useful links are:
Then, if you feel this community is the right fit for you, come on in and introduce yourself! There are always a lot of people who are more then happy to say “hi!” and welcome a newbie!
After that it's advised that you register your establishment, your staff, and your horses in the Directory category! Each sub-section of this category has a template ready for your to fill out. All you need to do is create a topic. Registering here isn't mandatory, but we would love to see what all you have to share!
Done all that? Well, now the world is your oyster! Or at least this forum is, feel free to join in roleplays, jump in on competitions, write a story, a legacy or even start a photo album! There's no right or wrong way to start participating!
Let's Talk Competitions
There are essentially two types of competitions: ESRPG competitions, and non-ESRPG competitions. If a competition is tagged as an ESRPG show, that means if you're registered with our ESRPG system, your horse and/or character that you enter can collect XP for their entries. More on that can be read here:
However, not all competitions will be for the ESRPG. These shows will have their own specific rules and other parameters as outlined by the show's host. For an overview of competitions, you can read about them here:
Moreover we have other events such as workshops, clinics, and contests that may take place around the forum. These are all different and vary from one activity to the next, so you'll just have to read about each before deciding if an event sounds fun to you!
Equus-Sims does not use any form of currency outside of roleplaying. Buying and selling horses is now up to the seller to decide whether they wish for applications to be sent in detailing how and why a person should be chosen for that horse or foal, or else first come first serve. In no way should real life money be used to purchase horses, and no other currency should be used from any other sites to facilitate the sale of horses or foals. Please do not advertise in our Adoptions & Rescues board for horses you're selling on other equestrian websites.
Why do I keep hearing "roleplay"?
When we use the term roleplaying, we're not explicitly talking about writing, we're talking about a mindset. When you're here, we want you to really get into the stories you create around the horses and characters and establishments you've built. We want you to get "in character" as much as your imagination will allow you to go. Is this mandatory? Absolutely not, but it is a part of the nature of our gameplay, and to get the full experience we suggest you at least give it a try! (Who knows, maybe you'll like it more than you thought you would!)
(Note: ESRPG and Roleplay are two different terms, the RPG shall be covered later on in this guide)
Now, while we're on the subject, roleplaying can also be a form of collaborative storytelling, where you and at least one other member (friend or soon to be a new friend) get together and write a story! Your roleplay can be related to equestrianism, or can simply be a day in the life of your character, wherever or whatever they're up to!
Here are some handy resources we have on roleplaying (specific to writing):
The ESRPG is a subset of Equus-Sims. It features opt-in gameplay for members who enjoy progression and want something to work toward as a player.
At the heart of the ESRPG is your character. Your goal is develop them through several career tracks to become the best at what they do, opening up a new sets of perks, abilities, and options for them. In addition, players can also choose to develop with their horses, upgrading them alongside their characters.
A huge thanks to @karifmormin for writing this guide for us!
