I've been talking about putting this up for a little while now and I finally had some time to sit down and give it some thought. Below you'll find my surface-level notes. These are by no means final, just the preliminary thoughts on a new system of gameplay.
Let me preface this by saying the following would be opt-in, unless overwhelmingly accepted once it's gone live and we've worked out some of the inevitable kinks.
The point of this RPG "system" is to encourage participation, collaboration, and progressive gameplay without
contingency on competition and worth. The focus is instead on advancing your horses, riders, trainers, and barns via the journey you take on Equus-Sims RPG. You will make choices along the way, with the goal of creating unique experiences based on your level so that each new activity will feel different from the last.
Please have a look at the diagram below, then follow up with the text at the bottom!
Each of the career paths listed above (which are just off the top of my head examples) would have 10 levels with unique titles, perks, and/or custom content associated with them. You level up through a variety of activities, such as attending workshops, clinics, hosting or showing in competitions, etc. The curriculum for gaining XP would be different for horses, characters, and barns.
Hall of Fame
These are not leaderboards. However, similarly, they are used to hallmark the best of the best, those who reach the top of their paths. Each level 10 will have its own Hall of Fame award, and we will have HOF's for each of the individual paths. When you visit our HOF's, there will be a plaque and picture of your sim or horse to commemorate their excellence.
Earlier I mentioned making each activity "feel different from the last." So here's the thing, the best part about RPGs is that you get to make your experience unique to you. You get choices, you get options. With this RPG system, your character's career path will determine what kind of entry you submit for an event. So for example, in a show, if you enter as a Trainer, then your entry is going to be different than someone who enters as a Rider.
- i.e. If your character is part of the Trainer career path, then your entry will be unique to the experience by requiring a photo of before, during, or after training at a show. This could be giving encouragement to your team, or could be you saving the day when one of your rider's forgets their helmet, or you helping during a warm-up session just before a show. Hosts can also set unique parameters for each path, setting different requirements for each to help add depth and diversity to each event.
In terms of XP, I'm thinking that every entrant gains XP for just participating in a show. Winners and those who place are competing for prizes, not XP. Now, lower levels will not gain as much XP as higher levels. Also, if your rider enters a level lower than they are, they will not gain as much XP for participating.
So I guess that's about as far as I've gotten, but I worked out a path example to show you (illustrated above) and hopefully this is enough to get us started on discussing it. I think it could be great, it might have some flaws, but there's so much we can do with it! It will satiate any progressive needs, as well as foster creativity and keep things fresh for new and old members alike.
So, whatcha got? Ideas, thoughts, comments, screaming and excited gifs? All are welcome. <3
