It was 4am, dark, cold, and windy. I was one of the first people to show up in the stables and as I walked towards our horses they all began whinnying, in the first stall Bucephala peaked her head out and nickered, I patted her neck and glanced over at her neck holding my breath.
"Oh gooood girl! You kept your braids in!!" I was beyond ecstatic when I saw that her little buttoned up braids had all survived over night. I gave the mare her grain and walked down the next few stalls giving each horse their own grain. I noticed Flame (Nemesis of Flames) hadn't been braided yet and I wondered if Carlie was doing that thing where she'd leave something for me to do without actually asking me. So me being me and knowing Carlie all too well I started braiding Flames glossy mane.
Flame is one of our best show jumpers she's been on the circuit of high level competing for a few years, she's a hot and fiery thoroughbred (or dragon) and I'm totally intrigued by her. I've never ridden her or really rode a horse like her, I prefer riding big, chunky, level headed warmbloods. Carlie is really the only one who can ride this mare (or so I thought), Flame is a tricky horse you can't make her upset or she'll have a total meltdown and it takes awhile for her to forgive and trust you again, but you have to ride kind of aggressive with her because she's very strong and if you don't set her up properly to a jump she'll get flat and basically go through it. So to sum it all up she's a difficult horse to ride.
As I braided the mare's mane I hummed and thought about how great this day will be, I'll be riding my favorite horses in fun classes. At around 5am Carlie came into the barn and asked me a question that stopped me dead in my tracks.
"Will you please ride Flame for me today?"
I couldn't believe I agreed to something like this, just thinking about riding this horse made me so nervous, and she was my first ride today. As I mounted up my coach -an absolutely lovely man- gave me some last words with Carlie shouting out words as well. The last thing I heard Carlie yell as I rode into the arena was "make her get 2 strides in the 1 stride line"
Flame pranced into the arena her tail was high up and swishing around, she could tell I was nervous and that just fueled the fire, I asked her to canter and she jumped into the canter, as I tried to get a good rhythm Flame bounced up and down until I gave up and pointed her at the first jump. I made her wait and and drove her with my seat and she listened surprisingly well. The next few jumps weren't as pretty, we either got too long or chipped in but she was able to save my butt and clear them all. Before I knew it the one stride was coming up, it looked unbelievably hard, the first jump was a 1,45m oxer and the second jump was a 1,50m vertical. I held her, my breath and closed my eyes. I felt her take the oxer slowly and as we landed I sat deep and made her wait and we did it we got two strides in a one stride line. I don't know how we did it, but we did it. As we cleared the last few jumps I patted the mare's neck and couldn't stop smiling.
Maybe hot horses aren't that bad after all.
