"Mom? What are you doing here?" Lara called and pushed through the crowd to get to the wondering woman. She grabbed the arm of the tall model pulling her to face Lara.
"Lara!" She laughed and hugged her daughter tight. "It's been way too long since I've seen you. The facilities look great too!" She stepped back to admire Lara, who smiled tensely. "And guess what? I brought Taffy along to celebrate the opening too!"
Lara's smile slipped away and turned into a frown. "You brought her?" She stepped back and looked around.
"She's outside. Come let's take a picture." Bright smile still flashing, the tall woman dragged her daughter outside of the barn party. Standing by the pond was Taffy, laughing with other party goers and showing off her looks. Lara boiled at the sight of her, she hadn't left France in good terms with her half sister. The other people meandered away as the mother and daughter joined the group.
"Taffy...." Lara grumbled with fake enthusiasm. Taffy grabbed Lara by the waist, surprising her, and squeezed her tight.
"I love it here! It's definitely not as cold as France, and more bright at this time of year. It has such a rural feel, as if we are all alone." Taffy chattered as she looked around. "And the horses are beautiful. They must be soooo expensive. Do you get to ride them? Probably not, but I want to ride one. I'm still riding with the Munichs in France and then with a different stable when I'm with daddy." Lara thought jumping off a cliff was the best option at this point.
"Come girls, I want to take your picture and post it so everyone can see how beautiful you two are!" Their mother beckoned and backed up, pulling out her phone.
"Oh Lara, you still have those horrible tattoos?" Lara rolled her eyes and stood next to Taffy. "Can you at least try to look happy?" Taffy grabbed Lara and leaned forward and laughed adding in her model smile. "Pose another way, please."
Lara remembered the reason she had willingly left France to go to America with Bree. "Enough, I'm done." She scowled and pushed Taffy away. "I'm going back to the party to enjoy my time, and hopefully never seeing you again."
"But wait, Lara. Didn't Bree tell you?" Taffy frowned and pivoted to her half sister who turned around. "I'm staying with you and learning how to ride in America."
"What?" Lara put a hand to her temple and groaned. "Never mind," she gave up and headed back inside the barn in search of alcohol to soothe her anger.
"She's staying here!" Lara yelled into the phone. She paced in the kitchen, not wanting to believe it. "In my house and riding my horses!"
A small crackle came out of the phone before Lara's older sister Brooke began speaking. She listened to her sister's response before yelling again. "It's not going to get better. I hate her!" She sighed and leaned on the marble counter. "She's 18! She's supposed to be going to her international college and continuing her modeling and flirting with boys for money." More crackling. "I still can't believe Mother left our father for that scum." Silence again. "No it's not between me and Mother! No...but that's not the point...whatever..... I have to go to bed, my head is killing me.....No I didn't drink too much...Bye." Lara hung up the phone and staggered to bed.
"You're making me ride a PONY?" Taffy's shrill rang out across the arena. "At Florida I rode Thoroughbreds, and I know you have plenty of those."
"Just get on the damn horse."
Taffy huffed and swung into the saddle. "There's nothing wrong with Dizzy, he's small, just like you."
"Mother would kill you if she saw you riding with out a helmet." Lara commented as she watched Taffy jump Dizzy over a small oxer.
"She left for her flight to Brazil hours ago. And you ride with out one all the time."
"Look it's snowing!"
"It's not like you haven't seen snow before...."
Thank's for reading! Sorry for the long story, but I needed a way to introduce Taffy and Lara's introduction.
